Between 1990 and 2008, some 10 million of the 17 million new homes built in the U.S. were constructed in what is known as the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI), an area of high risk from wildfire. In California, there are over three million people living in the WUI.

See a map of fire threats in California. Much of California’s land has been designated as high-risk for uncharacteristically intense fire.
