Living and Learning at Swanton Pacific Ranch

By Rich Gordon, President, Calforests

On Friday, April 19th I had the opportunity to visit Swanton Pacific Ranch, a division of the CalPoly State University College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Services. I was truly impressed by the educational opportunities available on this working landscape. I was obviously most interested in their forestry operations, but also impressed with the activity across an entire watershed. My hosts for the tour, Brian Dietterick, Director of the Ranch, and Walter Ruzzo, Chair of the Advisory Committee, shared with me their vision for a new Educational Center and Field Camp. Incidentally, Calforests 2019 Chair, John Andersen with the Mendocino and Humboldt Redwood Companies, is also a member of the Advisory Committee for Swanton Pacific Ranch. When this vision becomes a reality, the educational opportunities will increase dramatically.  Thanks to Brian and Walt for the great tour.
