Millwright- Today's highly mechanized production facilities require trained workers to repair, fabricate and service equipment in a safe and efficient manner. This job requires a working knowledge of electricity, hydraulics, pumps, motors, gearboxes and mechanics. Millwrights are required to use a variety of tools including a cutting torch, arc welder, drill press, grinder (hand-held and stationary), and hand tools. These jobs require the ability to prioritize jobs, work under pressure and the ability to work while planning the next state of a project. Similar job titles include: Maintenance Mechanic, Fabricator or Welder.
Certified Grader- Graders mark lumber according to grade for final shipment while maintaining production flow. This position checks the lumber for quality grades (according to industry certification systems), checks for species and board defects by vision and touch. Graders must be able to use specialized equipment such as moisture meters and calipers and have knowledge of grade specification, species, lumber values and width and length specifications. This work requires high attention to detail in a fast-paced working environment and experience in a mill environment.
Cogeneration Plant Operator- Many manufacturing facilities generate power using mill waste and biomass from other sources. Operators run, maintain and/or supervise the use of boilers, turbines, generators, fuel handling and furnace systems, as well as forklifts, loaders and fire safety equipment. The work requires attention to detail and safety procedures, and an understanding of the theories of high pressure/temperature steam generation.
Line Operators- Operators perform machine operation duties within mill or production facilities. These jobs include machine operation, production review and in some cases, minor machine repairs. Operators use standard hand tools and customized production tools. The work requires attention to detail and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment in a safe and efficient manner.
Assembly Crew- Crewmembers assemble secondary products using finished lumber in production and manufacturing facilities. These jobs include machine operation, sorting and assembly work. Operators use tools including customized production tools, mitre saws, nail guns, and caulking guns. The work requires attention to detail and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment in a safe and efficient manner.
What classes should I take to prepare for college?
Classes that give students the skills to solve problems in a production environment such as science and math will help prepare students for this work. Many require skills obtained in classes such as Mechanics and Welding.
Which schools offer education programs for these types of jobs?
Additional training from equipment manufacturers, community college level classes such as welding, employer sponsored training and/or job experience may be required for some of these positions.
